Five Weekend Fixes for a Quieter Room

Quiet, well-treated rooms do not require a builder. Here are five small jobs you can finish in a weekend that will noticeably improve how a room sounds and how much noise it lets through.

1. Seal the door

Fit a brush strip or drop seal to the bottom of the door and add foam tape around the frame. It is a half-hour job that cuts a surprising amount of noise.

2. Hang heavier curtains

Swap thin curtains for thick, lined ones. They quieten window noise and soften reflections at the same time.

3. Lay a rug

A large rug on a hard floor removes the harsh slap between floor and ceiling, instantly warming the sound of a room.

4. Fill a corner

  • Add a tall bookcase or a soft corner absorber to tame booming bass.
  • Keep it full, as densely packed shelves work better than sparse ones.

5. Break up a bare wall

A large fabric wall hanging, a padded headboard or a single absorptive panel on an echoey wall removes flutter echo and makes speech clearer. None of these jobs needs special skill, and together they transform a room over a single weekend.
